Fools in the Magic Kingdom: Disney Unhinged (Book One) by Michael Hartnett takes you on a wild ride through the not-so-glamorous underbelly of the most iconic theme parks in the world. Having never been to a Disney anything, I didn’t know what to expect. I mean, Fantasia would’ve been so much better had Mickey worn a jimmy hat on his nose. After reading Fools in the Magic Kingdom, I see I’m not the only one.
Hartnett does a brilliant job leading us through some of the least magical moments in the most magical place on Earth as we follow different characters as they spend time shooting a film, planning pranks, or protecting the park from visitors (albeit not the other way around). I can tell you this, “magic” certainly isn’t what it used to be as greed and racism dull the glitter and snap the dreamers back to reality.
From the eerie to effulgent and enchanting to weird, Hartnett’s story is full honest, true-to-life characters with their own unique personalities, hopes, dreams, not-so-subtle affectations. The dialogue is sharp and witty and lands somewhere in a fantastic mix of silly, serious, and sardonic. You’ll never look at Disney characters or the magical home in the same way again!
